Spinal decompression therapy in Auckland is a computer-controlled, non-surgical treatment designed to reduce pressure within spinal discs. It is commonly used for disc bulges, herniated discs, and sciatica caused by nerve compression. By gently unloading the affected spinal segment in a structured, intermittent pattern, decompression aims to reduce disc pressure, improve circulation, and support the body’s natural recovery process. At Auckland Disc Clinic, decompression is delivered as part of a structured Disc Recovery Program rather than as a casual stand-alone session.
-
Spinal decompression may be suitable for certain cases of MRI-confirmed disc bulge, disc protrusion, or herniated disc, particularly where nerve irritation or sciatica is present. Suitability depends on clinical findings, symptom duration, and neurological status. An Initial Disc Assessment is required to determine whether decompression therapy is appropriate for your condition.
-
Disc and nerve conditions typically require structured care over time rather than isolated treatment. Most patients with disc-related lower back pain or sciatica are enrolled in a 12, 24, 36, or 48-visit Disc Recovery Programme depending on severity and chronicity. Progress is measured at defined review points to ensure the programme remains clinically appropriate.
-
The full session value for spinal decompression is $140 per visit. Most patients enroll in a structured program, and program fees vary depending on the number of visits required. The appropriate program and total investment are discussed during your Initial Disc Assessment once suitability is confirmed. We prioritise transparency so you understand the structure, costs, and expectations before committing to care.
-
If your condition qualifies under ACC, ACC may contribute up to $30 per visit toward spinal decompression therapy. The remaining portion of the session fee is the patient’s responsibility. ACC eligibility depends on the nature of the injury, claim status, and clinical findings.
-
Many New Zealand health insurance policies include cover for chiropractic care. Whether spinal decompression therapy is included depends on your individual policy and annual limits. We recommend confirming your entitlements directly with your insurer. We can provide documentation to support your claim where applicable.
-
Spinal decompression is a conservative, non-surgical option for certain disc and nerve conditions. Some patients explore decompression therapy before considering surgical referral, while others use it after unsuccessful conservative care. It is not a replacement for surgery in all cases, and suitability is determined through clinical assessment and imaging review where required.
-
We use measurable outcomes to track progress throughout your Disc Recovery Program. If meaningful improvement is not observed at review milestones, your care plan will be reassessed. In some cases, further imaging, referral, or alternative management pathways may be recommended. Our goal is structured, evidence-informed care — not indefinite treatment.

Spinal decompression therapy works best when delivered consistently and on schedule. Appointments are booked back-to-back, and timing is important to maintain clinical flow. Patients are asked to arrive five minutes before their scheduled time. Late arrivals may need to be rescheduled depending on availability, as sessions cannot be extended beyond their allocated time. One courtesy rescheduled appointment is allowed per 12-visit program. Additional missed appointments may be forfeited. This policy ensures fairness to all patients and maintains the structure required for effective disc recovery.
